No. 32 Self compassion will change your life
In this episode, I’m mounting the case for self-compassion as the ultimate game-changer in your life. I’ll break down what self-compassion really is, dispel common myths, share its incredible benefits, and, most importantly, teach you how to start practicing it today.
I’ll share a personal anecdote about the biggest transformation I experienced in 2024, revealing how self-compassion played a pivotal role—and don’t miss the end where I share my updated self-compassion scores!
We’ll explore insights from the queen of self-compassion herself, Dr. Kristen Neff (fun fact: I once took a college course with her!). From her research, we’ll dive into the three pillars of self-compassion:
Mindfulness vs. Over-Identification: Recognizing moments of suffering without getting lost in them.
Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgment: Treating yourself like you’d treat a good friend, activating the nervous system’s calming powers.
Common Humanity vs. Isolation: Understanding that suffering is a shared human experience, not something uniquely happening to “me.”
You’ll also learn how resistance to reality amplifies pain and discover practical techniques to reframe self-criticism, soothe yourself physically and emotionally, and even use meditation to anchor your practice.
We’ll bust myths like “self-compassion is selfish” or “it kills motivation,” showing how it actually builds resilience, reduces fear of failure, and helps us show up better for others.

Your prescription for living well, dose for this week: At any point you are at, you can always bring in this practice — it’s never too late. You have never missed the boat on being compassionate with yourself in any given moment. Some ways to practice self-compassion: challenge your negative self-talk, journal (write out statements you are saying to yourself + then ways to reframe them), physical comfort/soothing - hand on heart, give yourself a hug, pat/rub your legs, rub hands together - help your body get into it’s parasympathetic state, speaking outloud to yourself + meditation. Memorize or put this Kristen Neff statement on a sticky note: This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is a part of life. May I be kind to myself in this moment. May I give myself the compassion I need. 🌷
