Minidose 14 How does tarot work?

Welcome to a special "Evergreen Rx 101" mini-dose! In this episode, we’re diving into the enchanting world of tarot—just in time for spooky season! Whether you're a curious beginner or looking to brush up on the basics, this primer will equip you with enough knowledge to confidently pull cards and explore their messages.

We'll kick off with a brief history of tarot, tracing its roots from 15th-century playing cards to its evolution into a tool for divination and self-reflection. You'll get a rundown of the 78 cards in a tarot deck, split into the Major and Minor Arcana, along with the Court cards. The Major Arcana represents life's big messages—from the Fool to the World—while the Minor Arcana’s four suits (Pentacles, Cups, Swords, Wands) explore the more everyday energies in our lives. Don't worry, the Death card doesn't mean doom!

By the end, you'll feel confident enough to grab a tarot deck, set an intention, shuffle, and pull cards with ease. We’ll also share tips on interpreting the cards and making the deck’s guidebook your best friend.

Your prescription for living well, dose for this week: So if you want to jump into tarot and start pulling cards — remember there is no, right or wrong way. You can use tarot as a way to connect to your intuition. Set an intention or notice if you have some questions to ask in your pull. You can find different spreads to follow online or you can pull one card for the day. Shuffle the cards or mix them around dishwasher style. Pull the top, the bottom, cut them, randomly choose one, whatever feels right. If you can stand it, before you look at the guidebook, see what you notice. Look at the symbolism — the colors, shapes of things, the distance between things, if there is a person or animal, is the sun or moon present … you get the idea. Is there a number on the card? Is it a major or a minor card? What suit is it in? Layers of meaning that can lead to nuance. See if you can come up with a meaning for yourself and then you can go to the guidebook if you feel like doing it. See where there is overlap or difference and assess what your interpretation is of the card in relation to your question or intention. ₊˚
