No. 39 Work vs. fun, wasting time + dark humor

Today we’re talking about something so many of us wrestle with: the pressure to “use our time wisely.” A listener writes in about feeling disconnected from fun—not because their life is falling apart, but because everything feels like a task to optimize. Even rest comes with guilt.

We explore:

  • softening the line between work and play

  • why wasting time might be the most healing thing you do

  • the difference between dopamine hits and slow, sustaining joy

  • coping with shutdown by being less precious about our time

Plus: a listener voicemail about the impact of flippant comments like “I want to die” when facing discomfort or inconveniences of life.

I love this one and I hope you do too! Share with a friend to keep the conversation going <3

We have endless options available to us today. Just choose one. The stakes aren’t as high as we sometimes make them. Practical tools - set a hard out for when you stop working for the day, put a block in your calendar for exploration or nothing-to-do-time/relaxation, set a timer so you can give your self a chance to have the dopamine hit from a less dopamine inducing activity — those that don’t involve scrolling. You don’t have to earn time or enjoyment. You get it. 😀⏱️
